George O. Mitchell was born in Youngstown, Ohio. George graduated Harvard University in 1961 and the University of Miami School of Law in 1964. George is a Florida Bar Board Certified Lawyer in Admiralty and Maritime Law, Florida Bar Certified Circuit Court Mediator, and has received the distinguished “AV” rating from Martindale Hubbell.
George has been a practicing trial lawyer for more than 50 years, actively prosecuting and defending all types of litigation in state and federal courts. George has tried to verdict hundreds of jury and bench trials involving numerous types of cases, including commercial litigation, contract claims, antitrust claims, trademark and unfair competition claims, product liability claims, and claims involving serious bodily injury and death.
In the field of admiralty, George is experienced in both prosecuting and defending claims involving hull and P&I (protection and indemnity), passenger and crew, tug and barge, charters liability, collision, allision, salvage, limitation proceedings and other claims involving maritime liens, preferred ships mortgages, vessels involved in bankruptcy proceedings, and disputes arising out of the purchase, sale and construction of vessels. During his career, George has represented or acted for a number of Lloyd’s syndicates and British P&I Clubs, including the UK Club, the Standard Club, the West Club, and Steamship Mutual. Past clients include Brunswick Corporation and Exxon Mobil Corporation, as well as numerous self-insureds such as boat builders, engine manufacturers, tugboat operators, and yacht and shipyards.
George is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the United States Courts of Appeals for the Fifth and Eleventh Circuits, and all Florida State Courts. George’s professional affiliations include the Dade County Bar Association, the Maritime Law Association of the United States, where George is a proctor, and the Southeastern Admiralty Law Institute. George has twice been named a Super Lawyer by his peers. In his free time, George enjoys spearfishing, playing the piano, jazz music, and recently earned his amateur radio license (HAM).
