Animal Risks After a Hurricane in Florida

Animal Risks After a Hurricane in Florida

Understanding the Threats and Protecting Yourself

Hurricanes are a regular part of life for Floridians, bringing with them high winds, heavy rains, and significant property damage. While much of the focus is on preparing homes and securing belongings, it’s essential to consider another critical aspect: animal risks after a hurricane. The aftermath of a storm can increase encounters with dangerous animals, posing a threat to both residents and their pets.

At CMS Law Group, we specialize in helping clients navigate the complexities of post-hurricane challenges, including insurance claims and personal injury cases stemming from animal encounters. This article explores the common animal risks after a hurricane in Florida and provides actionable steps to protect yourself and your loved ones.

Why Hurricanes Increase Animal Risks

After a hurricane, the environment undergoes dramatic changes that can increase encounters with wildlife and displaced pets. Here are some reasons why animal risks spike after a storm:

  • Flooding and Habitat Displacement: Heavy rains and storm surges flood natural habitats, forcing animals like snakes, alligators, and rodents to seek higher ground—often in residential areas.
  • Destroyed Barriers: Damaged fences and other barriers can lead to pets escaping or wild animals wandering into human spaces.
  • Decomposing Waste: Piles of debris and food waste attract scavengers, such as raccoons, coyotes, and feral pigs.
  • Increased Stress and Aggression: Both wild animals and domestic pets experience heightened stress after a hurricane, which can make them more aggressive and unpredictable.

Understanding these dynamics is the first step in mitigating animal-related risks after a storm.

Common Animal Risks After a Hurricane in Florida

1. Snakes

Florida is home to a variety of snake species, including venomous ones like cottonmouths, rattlesnakes, and coral snakes. Flooding often forces these reptiles out of their natural habitats, and they may hide in debris, under buildings, or inside homes.

Safety Tips:

  • Wear boots and gloves when clearing debris.
  • Be cautious when reaching into piles of wood or other materials.
  • If bitten, seek immediate medical attention and try to remember the snake’s appearance for identification.

2. Alligators

Hurricanes can drive alligators into unexpected areas, including roads, backyards, and even pools. These powerful predators may feel threatened and attack if approached.

Safety Tips:

  • Keep a safe distance if you spot an alligator.
  • Avoid walking near bodies of water at night.
  • Contact local wildlife authorities to report sightings.

3. Feral Hogs

Feral hogs are another common problem after hurricanes. These animals can be aggressive, especially if they feel cornered or if their young are nearby.

Safety Tips:

  • Do not approach or attempt to feed feral hogs.
  • Secure trash bins and food sources to avoid attracting them.
  • Report aggressive hogs to wildlife officials.

4. Stray and Displaced Pets

Hurricanes often lead to pets escaping from their homes or being abandoned. Stray dogs and cats may become aggressive due to stress, injury, or lack of food.

Safety Tips:

  • Approach stray animals cautiously and avoid sudden movements.
  • Call animal control if you encounter an injured or aggressive pet.
  • Keep your own pets indoors and monitor them closely.

5. Mosquitoes and Insects

Flooding creates ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes, increasing the risk of diseases like West Nile Virus and Zika. Other insects, such as fire ants, may form floating colonies during floods.

Safety Tips:

  • Use insect repellent and wear protective clothing.
  • Remove standing water from your property as soon as possible.
  • Be cautious when wading through floodwaters to avoid fire ant bites.

6. Wildlife Scavengers

Animals like raccoons, coyotes, and even bears may scavenge for food in neighborhoods affected by hurricanes. These animals can pose risks to both humans and pets.

Safety Tips:

  • Secure all food and garbage in animal-proof containers.
  • Avoid feeding wildlife, as this can make them more aggressive.
  • Keep pets inside, especially during dawn and dusk when scavengers are most active.

Legal Implications of Animal Risks After a Hurricane

Animal encounters can lead to serious injuries and, in some cases, legal complications. Understanding your rights and responsibilities is crucial:

  • Property Damage: If wildlife damages your property, you may need legal assistance to navigate insurance claims and determine coverage.
  • Personal Injury: Injuries from animal attacks, such as dog bites or snakebites, may entitle you to compensation. CMS Law Group can help you determine liability and pursue a claim.
  • Pet-Related Disputes: If a neighbor’s pet causes harm after a hurricane, you may have a case for damages.

Navigating these legal issues can be complex, but our experienced attorneys are here to guide you every step of the way.

My husband and I were having a terrible time with our homeowners insurance after making a claim for damage sustained to our roof during a storm. We were nervous about the thought of litigating against them and the potential outcomes that could arise. Our insurance company dragged their feet and were able to benefit from all of the delays that came from the COVID pandemic. Mrs. Chavin and everyone at the CMS law firm were amazing. They eased all of our concerns and did a great job explaining the process to us novices. The team anticipated the actions that the insurance company would take in an effort to avoid payment and strategized a plan that led to a successful resolution. We are not only grateful for the settlement that was reached but for the way we were treated by everyone at CMS. And a special thank you to Mrs. Chavin - she is an exceptionally strong, smart, empathetic woman who always made herself available to us. We were lucky to have her represent us. We highly recommend them!

My 82-year-old mother recently had a small flood in the home due to a toilet failure. The estimate of damage was over $ 24,000.00. The Insurance Co offered $4500.00 and refused to pay a penny more. I hired a Public Adjuster who estimated the true cost to repair the water damage. The Issuance Company dragged their feet and ignored our request for a fair settlement. Our requests for a fair settlement went unanswered until the Law Firm of Chavin, Mitchell and Shmuel was hired. Within 72 Hours, a settlement was on the table, but was not adequate. The Law Firm immediately litigated on our behalf and settled the claim within hours. I could not have hoped for a better outcome. Thanks to the Law Firm of Chavin, Mitchell, and Shmuely for helping out the little guy and forcing the Insurance Company to do the right thing.
I would like to take a moment and note that this was one of the most surprisingly pleasant interactions with a law firm I have ever had. The experience with these professionals was first and foremost incredibly professional, comfortable and respectable. They work incredibly hard and truly care about what outcome is best for you. The advice was honest and sincere and I know no other attorney would have put in so much passion and effort to make sure that I got what I deserved. I walked away feeling accomplished and remedied and would recommend their services above all others. Choosing a personal injury attorney is one of the hardest decisions people have to make and I'm so happy to say it was one of my easiest. Thank you to each and every individual in the firm who spent time on me personally. I truly appreciate it :)
